Types of Carpets
We also clean other types of carpet, as well as wool carpets. These include other natural fibres such as, sisal, jute, cotton, coir, velvet and bamboo. The process for cleaning and treating these carpets is very similar the methods explained above, for cleaning wool carpets.
The process for cleaning synthetic fibres, such as nylon, acrylic, polyester, polypropylene or Raylon, is different as these materials absorb less of the cleaning product (and spillages) and we can also clean them using a product with a higher pH level.
Our carpet technicians are qualified to work out which type of material your carpet is made from. They do this by locating a small loose piece of fabric (that will be unnoticed) and burning it.
They can tell from the scent and feel of the fabric whether the carpet is made from natural or synthetic materials. There are also carpets that are made of wool and synthetic materials. We treat these the same as we treat 100% wool carpets.
COMMON NATURAL FIBRES: WOOL, SISAL, JUTE, COTTON, COIR, VELVET, BAMBOO.
To determine which type of carpet you have, our technicians use a method which requires removing a small bit of fabric (on the stairs there are usually loose bits we can use) and burning it.
They have passed training courses and learned to recognise the different smells from different materials, and they assess the way the material feels after burning it. Some carpets are made of a mixture of natural and synthetic materials. In this case we will treat the carpet as a natural carpet to ensure that no damage is done it.
If we are cleaning a synthetic carpet, we can use a higher pH cleaning product and a higher temperature, for a deeper clean. Synthetic fabric will only absorb 8% of spillages (and cleaning products) so it is easier to remove stains from and will also dry more quickly after the cleaning. For synthetic carpets we can use spots and stain remover products, close to bleaching, to remove stains.
COMMON SYNTHETIC FIBRES: NYLON, ACRYLIC, POLYESTER, POLYPROPYLENE, RAYON.
If we are cleaning a carpet made with natural materials, we must use a maximum of 8 pH to make sure we will not damage the carpet and keep the colour safe. The natural material fabrics absorb 30% of cleaning products and spillages - so that means it will take longer to dry.
We cannot use the usual spots and stain remover products as they are too strong and could damage the carpet. We have lower PH products to use for the natural materials.
After the carpet has been cleaned, we use a pH meter to check that the pH level of the material is back at a normal level. We highly recommend for your carpet to be cleaned once a year to prevent a build-up of dust and bacteria, particularly if you have a wool carpet.
Choose Premium Clean to take care of your wool carpet
Wool carpets are made from strands of a sheep’s fleece, and they are a popular, classic choice for many reasons. They provide very good insulation which helps to keep your home warm, hypoallergenic so they can help people with allergies and asthma, fire-resistant, dirt-resistant, and best of all, they are soft and luxurious. Although they can be a bit pricey in comparison to some other types of carpet, if a wool carpet is well looked after and cleaned often it will last a very long time. When it comes to cleaning a wool carpet, we highly recommend that you use a professional cleaning company, like us at Premium Clean and do not try to clean the carpet yourself as they are delicate and require the correct techniques and products. Whether you have had a spillage, have old built-in stains, or you are looking for someone to complete your annual clean, Premium Clean is here to help you restore your carpet to looking brand new.
What method is best for cleaning wool carpets?
The best method for cleaning wool carpets it’s the wet cleaning method. At Premium Clean, the first step in cleaning your wool carpet, is always to use our professional SEBO vacuum cleaner, to remove any loose dirt and debris and we then concentrate on working out any tough stains – usually by hand first and then sometimes we need a little help from our stain removal machine. After this, we use our special steaming machines which clean using a range of temperatures. For wool carpets we usually set the temperature to between 30 and 40 degrees, which is perfect, because wool is a delicate, natural martial.
We also use delicate products for wool office carpet tiles cleaning and rugs, which is also imperative, to avoid any damage. We always recommend all furniture is removed from the room where possible (or we can move around it and move it back into place after) because wool can harbour dirt, dust and bacteria which can wear down the fibres and ultimately, affect the appearance and softness of your carpet, but it also become unhygienic and unsafe for allergy sufferers. We also highly recommend yearly cleaning for your wool carpet.
Alternatively, we can dry-clean a wool carpet which involves applying a special powder by hand and then using our dry-cleaning machine with brushes that puts the powder into the carpet, which cleans it. We then use our high-quality vacuum cleaner to remove the powder. There is no drying time for this method but we find it slightly less effective on wool. We are also accredited by NCCA (National Carpet Cleaning Association) and many other organisations.
Repair of wool carpets
Damage and stains removal service London can happen to your carpet in many different. Stains, we can guarantee cleaning for you, but damage will need our carpet repairing service. Examples of damage to the carpet we have experienced are spillages of bleach (which is extremely common) incorrect use of shop bought carpet cleaning products (we do not recommend using these as they can cause more damage than good), burns from hair straighteners, hair dryers and irons, sun damage, and sometimes general wear and tear can cause so much discolouration that the carpet will need to be repaired. Thankfully we can repair any damage done to your wool carpet. Our trained carpet technicians have all completed the WoolSafe organisation for the modular training solutions course, and they have all studied and passed exams in the professional re-dying of fibres, including wool. The repairing of the carpet involves cutting out the damaged carpet and cutting another piece of carpet shaped to fit the damaged area entirely which is dyed to an exact colour match and the glued and steamed down using our professional apparatus. The new carpet will be firmly stuck down and inconspicuous – no one will ever know there was any damage there.
Please give us a call today at Premium Clean to book in the cleaning of your wool carpet, you couldn’t be in safer hands, than if you book with us. How long does it take to dry the carpet after the clean?
Wool carpets can take longer than the average carpet to dry. This is because they absorb roughly 30% of the water that we use to clean the carpet with (this also means they absorb 30% of liquid spillages).
The drying time can be anywhere between 8 and 24 hours for a wool carpet, depending on the thickness of the carpet, how unclean it was to start with and the temperature and air flow in the room. But don’t worry, you will be able to walk on the carpet while it is drying, with plastic overshoes that we can provide to you.
We strongly recommend that you do not walk on the drying carpet with slippers or shoes on as this can be slippery and dangerous, and you also don’t want to tread the dirt straight back on to your gleaming clean carpet.
There are ways to help speed up the drying process – you can put the heating on, open the windows for ventilation or use a fan. We also have turbo dryers that are part of our premium service. These can dry the carpet in 2 hours.
What machines and products are best for carpet Wool cleaning?
When cleaning a wool carpet or rug, is it extremely important to use the correct machines and products. This is because wool is a natural fibre that is delicate and can be easily damaged if the wrong product or temperature is used on it. At Premium Clean, we only use top of the range machines and products from Prochem, who are the industry leaders at present. We have a range of machines from the Ashbys Enforcer, which is our huge industrial machine with 3 vacuum motors and a high PSI pressure pump to the Prochem Bravo which is very small and used only for removing spots and stains. If you have wool carpets thorough out your whole house, we may use the Prochem Powermax as this is used for bigger jobs.
Using the correct products on your wool carpet could not be more important, which is why always recommend an experienced, qualified technician cleans your wool carpet. We use products with a low pH level so that the carpet or rug is not damaged or discoloured, and we know how to apply these in a gentle, caring way. Water is around 7 pH which is safe for all materials. – we use a maximum 8 pH on wool carpets as these are designed especially for natural materials. Our products are Eco friendly and safe for children, pets and allergy sufferers.
